Misconfigured timeouts can cause healthy API requests to fail, unhealthy requests to cause outages or error information to be hidden. This is particularly true of N-Tier or Service Oriented applications, common in the cloud where load balancers, proxies, backends and databases increase the complexity of a single request.
Ryan will cover some first principals concerning request and response timeouts and the trade offs that must be weighed when designing an application deployment.
Ryan is a Production Engineering Manager at Seven West Media where his team delivers the infrastructure for many web properties including thewest.com.au and perthnow.com.au. Ryan's open source projects have been featured in devopsweekly.com and though he remains in Perth, he has attracted the attention of companies such as Stripe, Dropbox, Evernote and Facebook.
